Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison.

This year I鈥檝e been traveling a lot for the work I do, and I always fall behind on emails and messages. I make a noble attempt at keeping up, but eventually it gets to a point where just looking at words on a screen turns my brain to jelly.

听Don鈥檛 get me wrong, I do feel bad about it. When I do finally get to responding, I usually start out with something along the lines of 鈥淪orry it took me so long to get back to you.鈥

听I know - if it always takes me a long time to reply, there鈥檚 probably no need to keep saying it. Eventually people get to know that you are one of those people. I bet some say you can know a lot about someone by their messaging style.

听I used to love writing letters as a child. There was a pen-pal that shared the same name as me in Israel. My godmother in Australia. A friend in boarding school in Florida. I would鈥檝e felt like a horrible person to ever leave a letter unanswered. Now my paper, envelopes and stamps sit optimistically in a folder - I still plan to use them one day. But the guilt of not being able to write back to everyone fast enough has remained - till now.

听It hit me that it鈥檚 possible to live years - decades even - feeling guilty about not keeping up with the pace of modern life -forever thinking that someday, I am actually going to win my wrestling match with the inbox octopus! I鈥檓 not sure why, but recently I started to feel differently about it all.

听One of my favourite verses in the Bhagavad Gita is when Lord Krishna says 鈥淓verything rests upon me, as pearls are strung on a thread.鈥 These few words immediately put everything in perspective for me. Fear of missing out can melt away, anxiety about lacking or failing can ease up. Rather I鈥檓 trying to do what I can, living a little lighter with that which feels beyond me. I remember that God loves me and on a cosmic level, all is well, and as it鈥檚 meant to be. And even if I have 250 unread emails in my inbox, life will not fall apart.
