6 Music's Classic Hip Hop Playlist
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 6 Music presenter Huey Morgan looks back at some of rap music's defining moments from the early 80s and 90s.
The sub culture of hip hop emerged in the late 70s in the Bronx, New York, with bloc parties becoming increasingly popular; where the poorest communities and ethnic minorities would join together, kick back and have a street party.
It didn't begin with any political agenda, these communities fused together not only their different musical tastes but also the need to forget about the social issues of the time. These issues were as diverse and complex as rap music would become and the music is just one element of hip hop culture.
Huey Morgan from Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 6 Music takes a look back at this golden time with music videos from Sugar Hill Gang, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy amongst others.
