Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson, writer and Vicar of St Luke’s Holloway in London:

We are now officially in the wedding season. I do take weddings in the winter too; one of the most atmospheric was a gothic-style ceremony in a dimly lit church in the depths of December. The bride wore a black velvet dress, the groom a full-length leather coat – and they went to Transylvania for their honeymoon!

It’s 49 years since me and the missus stood in front of the altar (I was about ten at the time!) I proposed the third time we met and she was 7 months pregnant on the day! Little wonder no-one thought it would last. But here we are! And my top-tip for a long and happy marriage is simple: friendship.

But it’s not just about romantic relationships: friendship is arguably the greatest feature of all human existence – having people who makes you laugh, who tell you the truth even when it hurts, who know the song in your heart and sing it back to you when you’ve forgotten the words.

I love it that the Quakers call themselves ‘the Society of Friends’. Sadly, friendship is a much-underrated quality in religious thought. Which is why I was delighted to meet a Quaker RE teacher who said she built ‘the art of making friends’ into her RE curriculum. She believes friendship is the heart of all religion – at the heart of being human – a spiritual practice everyone can follow, regardless of belief or creed.

My wife who has a more grounded, less complicated approach to faith than me often says religion is simple: you just need to be kind, compassionate and friendly to people. Which is pretty much what Jesus taught when he said that the only requirement is for us to love God – by showing love to others.

I think of friendship as love in action. It isn’t always easy. We haven’t got through 49 years of marriage without a few scrapes.  But every day presents a wealth of opportunities to practice, to get better at it – with kindness and consideration, laughter and tears, apologies and forgiveness.

It’s my job to take weddings, but couples create marriage in the glorious humdrum of their daily friendship. I just get to help them tie the knot – and toast them with a glass…or three!
