Chris is joined by Olympic gold cyclist Victoria Pendleton who tells us about turning her hand to jousting for the English Heritage's Medieval Knights season. On Great Job Wednesday we meet Craig Pake, the lighthouse keeper who looks after over one hundred lighthouses in Scotland and the Isle of Man, which leads to today's Top Tenuous. Chris calls Bake Off queen Candice Brown and finds out what made her send in her chocolate, peanut butter and hazelnut brownies. Vassos is joined in the Sports Locker by English former football goalkeeper Rachel Brown and Dr Jim Harris has the Pause For Thought.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Art Historian, Dr Jim Harris:

The end of term comes in dribs and drabs in our house.聽 Miriam and Esther finished ages ago because they鈥檙e at University.聽 I鈥檓 still in Oxford, but all the students have gone.聽 Sam has been taking exams so he finished before Silas and Linus, whose schools drag on till the end of this week.聽 And Susie is on research leave and so term has no meaning for her and she lives in a semi-permanent state of bliss.

The thing is, though, we鈥檙e all looking forward to the summer like thirsty desert travellers who鈥檝e just spotted an oasis.聽 We鈥檙e all tired.聽 We鈥檙e all a little tetchy. In my case, if you asked the family, they might say that 鈥檃 little tetchy鈥, actually means, 鈥榓 walking, talking nightmare to live with鈥.

I鈥檓 pretty sure I share this with a lot of people: you don鈥檛 have to be in school or a teacher to have the sense that summer is a necessary moment of respite.聽 Whatever work we do, it鈥檚 a blessed relief to stop for a while.

Now it鈥檚 tempting to add, 鈥榓nd do something else鈥, so we, like many people, have planned our holidays way ahead of time.聽 But I鈥檓 wary of the idea that when we have downtime we need to fill it.聽 Last week I heard a parent on the radio talking about the value of boredom in the school holidays, and I think there鈥檚 something in that.

In the Bible, the prophet Isaiah knew something about weariness, that 鈥榚nd of term鈥 feeling.聽 鈥楨ven youths will faint and be weary,鈥 he says, 鈥榓nd the young will fall exhausted鈥.

And he also knew that you can鈥檛 always just pick yourself up and carry on.聽 You need a break.聽 You need a proper pause.

And so he continued, 鈥楾hose who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary.鈥

At the heart of that is the idea of waiting.聽 Your strength isn鈥檛 going to be renewed in an instant 鈥 you wait, and refreshment comes.聽

So I reckon that as the holidays finally arrive, it鈥檚 worth not just packing the diary with more stuff, even if it鈥檚 different stuff.聽 Wait first. Have a rest. And then you can run all you like.
