Organist Phil Kelsall celebrates 40 years at Blackpool Tower Ballroom with a special concert
Organist Phil Kelsall performs on the famous Wurlitzer as he celebrates 40 years as Blackpool Tower Ballroom organist in a special concert held last month to mark the occasion.
As the words of William Shakespeare inscribed above the Tower Ballroom Blackpool's ornate stage say, 'Bid Me Discourse, I Will Enchant Thine Ear.' And that's exactly what Phil Kelsall has been doing since 1977 when he began work as organist at the Tower Ballroom. That's also what he was doing in a special concert held last month to celebrate 40 years in his dream job. As ever, he performs on 'the mighty Wurlitzer', the same instrument made famous by Blackpool's other long-serving organist between 1930 and 1970, Reginald Dixon. In a programme ranging far and wide in styles and sounds, the music includes The Nun's Chorus by Johann Strauss, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, Rodgers and Hart's You Took Advantage Of Me and Phil's own celebrated arrangement of The Tiger Rag.
