Saughton Park
Susan Morrison hears about Saughton Park's unexpected connection to Senegal, the Runaway Slaves in Britain project at Glasgow University, and the Battle of Arras.
Comedian and history enthusiast Susan Morrison crosses the centuries - this week Susan goes to Saughton Park to find out about its remarkable history; to Glasgow University to catch-up with the Runaway Slaves in Britain project and our WW1@home feature reveals how Wick children cheered up soldiers on the Front with the gift of a fresh egg. Why Saughton park? In 1908 at the Scottish National Exhibition, it boasted a Senegalese village as a visitor attraction. Local singer-songwriter Samba Sene from Senegal joins Susan and Joe McGuigan and Lynn Corrigan of the history group to discuss their findings. Susan also chats to Peter McDougall Project Development Officer for the Park about the planned refurbishment of Saughton and revelations about what exactly happened to historic Saughton Hall... how do you lose a tower house and mansion? At Glasgow. Professor Simon Newman, Dr Stephen Mullen and Nelson Mundell of Glasgow university take Susan back to the 18th century, the lives of enslaved people in Scotland and their 'owners' attempts to catch them through the small ads.
