Health Poverty Action

Health Poverty Action works in partnership with the poorest communities around the world in their fight for better health. This means improving access to healthcare so that indigenous mothers like MarΓa have an equal chance of health and life in the future. We work on a range of vital health issues, including training local women to spot danger signs in pregnancy and ensure mothers can give birth safely.Β

800 women die every day due to pregnancy related complications. Like MarΓa, the vast majority are from the poorest communities within developing countries. Health Poverty Action works with them to overcome this injustice. Last year we supported over 293,000 mothers to access life-saving healthcare.

β€œI’ve learned to check the baby’s position in the womb, to know the risks and how I can refer women to hospital for treatment. We’re working together to ensure that no mothers should die due to pregnancy.” Β

Last year Health Poverty Action trained 11,450 people like Philipa to ensure healthcare is available in the hardest to reach areas.

Amina is from a nomadic community in Ethiopia, where the nearest health facility is five hours’ drive away. Β

β€œHad it not been for the educational outreach and the ambulance service Health Poverty Action provided, I would have died in childbirth at home. I’m now advocating other women to seek healthcare too.” Β

Last year Health Poverty Action supported 14 ambulances and stocked 476 health posts and mobile clinics in the world’s poorest communities.
