Halloween has grown hugely as a festival in recent years, costumes and effects have become ever more gory and vivid, but the recent phenomenon of scary clowns has gone a step further this year. Roy Jenkins asks what the attraction is of frightening each other at this time of year, whether this is just a safe way of confronting the horrors of the world, and how this links with the Christian festivals of All Souls and All Saints.
