Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Ruth Scott, Anglican Priest and Quaker:

What a week it’s been! Last Thursday I was in the middle of moving house after 27 years in Richmond. A couple of days later I staggered my way around the Windsor Half Marathon following in the wake of you, Chris, and the Radio 2 team. On Monday I was in London meeting up with my best beloved pal from Scotland, Alison, to catch up, have a good laugh and go art-gallery hopping. On Tuesday we were in Westminster Abbey remembering and giving thanks for our dear friend and colleague, Sir Terry, and the wonderful life he lived and invited others into. After a lovely lunch with his Old Geysers and Gals, who continue to do great things for charity and for each other, I headed off to Herefordshire where I spent yesterday working with a group of fellow Christians exploring leadership. Now here I am with you trying to bring some order to the rollercoaster of thoughts and feelings that have been part of all this activity and play. Such is the stuff of life in its many shades of joy and sadness. According to Christianity the purpose of Jesus was to enable people to experience life in all its fullness and not to settle for half measures when it comes to understanding who we and others are, and what gives us meaning and purpose. This last week in particular reminds me not only of the centrality of relationships in that adventure, but also of being able to celebrate and let go gratefully of what or who no longer is, in order to be open to what yet may be. Life is a gift to be shared not squandered on living in a past that is gone, or grasping it all to ourselves to the disadvantage of others. It’s common to talk about the cost of living in financial terms but I think the 19th century philosopher, Henry David Thoreau was more on the ball when he said, β€œThe price of anything is the amount of life you pay for it.” His words challenge me not to waste that life but to use it wisely and, in so far as I am able, to support other people my life touches, who are trying to do the same.
