Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

An Irish poet, Brendan Kennelly, once wrote a beautiful poem on the death of his father. He said that a man never dies as long as his memory lives.

Yesterday, nine months after his death, there was a memorial service for Sir Terry Wogan – many of you will no doubt have heard the broadcast. The tributes and reflections made the legendary broadcaster live again. Terry’s memory will never die as long as his millions of early morning listeners recall the blarney and the banter. He left us endless memories of his wit and wisdom.

He once offered me wise words about broadcasting. β€œThe secret of a successful career,” he said, β€œis to hang around long enough to become a habit”.

There was joy and sadness at yesterday’s service. Joy because that is what Terry brought to all our lives and sadness with the realisation that we shall never see his like again. That’s why memory is such a precious thing. It helps us to hold onto what we love and never want to lose. Where would we be without the vivid memories of the people we’ve met and places we’ve been? Memory is all we have.

Holding unto memories though can be painful. It’s the loneliness of it. Yet sacred memories live and give life when they are shared as we did yesterday.

No matter how much we resist it, we’ll lose our loved ones. But we never forget them and it’s the life in those memories which give us the faith to go on.

With Terry we still have countless laugh-out-loud moments from his morning radio and his hilarious Eurovision commentary. Memories of friendship, encouragement, goodness and kindness also abound. And how can we forget those wonderful November Fridays when millions were raised for Children in Need.

Each of us, and each listener too, have our own personal memories. We all felt better about ourselves when we listened to Terry. Being in his company was the magic pill which lifted the gloom. We have so much to be grateful for.

The Psalmist puts it perfectly -: β€œThe Righteous will be remembered forever.” (Ps112:6).
