State of Nature report, Bees, Delays with farm payments

A report looking at the health of our wildlife across the UK is published this week, citing intensive farming as one reason why so many species appear to be declining.

A report looking at the health of thousands of species across the UK is published this week. It cites intensive farming as one of the reasons why so many plants, animals, birds and insects appear to be on the decline.

In Norfolk a bee farmer says he's at a loss to explain the death of thousands of his bees. Mike Thurlow has co-founded the Bee Alive initiative to research what might be killing them off.

Meanwhile the British Beekeepers' Association is encouraging farmers to sign up to a website that will alert beekeepers to when crops are due to be sprayed. The Bee Connected initiative lets beekeepers know so they can return bees to their hives.

A Cumbrian farmer tells Farming Today she's still not received the money due under the 2015 Basic Payment Scheme, although it's less than three months to go until the 2016 payment window opens.
