Beanstalk

Beanstalk is a national children’s literacy charity which believes people have a better life when they can read well and are confident. We recruit, vet, train and support volunteer reading helpers who go into primary schools and help children who have fallen behind with their reading. In July 2015 more than 63,000 children left primary school unable to read to the expected standard. Beanstalk currently supports over 10,000 children per year with one-to-one literacy sessions to ensure they have the opportunity to read, grow and succeed.

Moris, who is nearly 8 years old and from Croatia, has one-to-one reading support sessions twice a week with his Beanstalk reading helper Jill. Like many of the children Beanstalk supports, Moris has English as an additional language and needs extra support to catch up with his classmates.

Reading opens the door to a child’s future

Reading opens the door to a child’s future
Being able to read is an essential life skill. Children who leave primary school unable to read well are at risk of suffering from the severe, life-long effects of poor literacy including educational underachievement, unemployment, poverty, criminality, poor health and social exclusion. Beanstalk intervenes at an early age to give struggling children the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Your support can change a child’s life

Your support can change a child’s life
For £30 Beanstalk can provide life-changing sessions for one child, twice a week, for a full school term. Beanstalk’s trained reading helpers come from all walks of life. They bring the magic of reading to children who are struggling and their support transforms the child’s reading ability and confidence.
