More Information
There are estimated to be several hundred people in vegetative or minimally conscious states in Wales - and, as medical interventions to save the body improve, numbers are growing. Their eyes often open, they cough; their hearts beat and they can breathe on their own. If they are vegetative they are supposed to have no awareness at all, but if they are 'minimally conscious' they are known to have moments of awareness.
