ISIS: Young, British and Radicalised
Newsnight journalist Secunder Kermani explores the allure of the miltant group and asks why some young British Muslims have joined up.
As a journalist on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Newsnight, Secunder Kermani has been reporting on the situation in Syria and Iraq for more then two years. In that time he's worked on many stories about how a small but worrying number of British Muslims have been joining ISIS to fight what they think is a jihad or holy war.
In this show for Radio 1 and 1Xtra's Stories, Secunder attempts to understand the allure of this brutal militant group. As a Muslim himself, he's always been intrigued by how people like him, raised in the UK, get involved with these radical beliefs that the vast majority of Muslims in Britain, and across the world, totally reject.
He explores how they attempt to attract new recruits, talks to former extremists, counter-terrorism police and follows the journey of a former supermarket security guard now fighting with ISIS in Syria. Secunder also meets the devastated family and friends of Britain's young jihadis here in the UK and explores the Government's continued efforts to tackle the problem.
