Where Are the Women in Music?
Only 16 per cent of the artists registered with PRS are female. Annie Mac asks if women can be just as successful as men in the music industry.
Can women be equally as successful as men in the music industry? Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1Xtra recently asked this very question when they hosted a debate at the Women of the World Festival (WOW) in London.
In this programme, Radio 1 presenter and international DJ Annie Mac sits down with singer, lyricist and guitarist from the band Wolf Alice, Ellie Rowsell, to listen to the debate and to discuss it on their own terms.
With only 16% of artists registered with PRS (the music copyright, royalties and licensing society) being female, and 86% of festival line-ups last year being made up of male artists, there are clearly questions to ask.
Do women have to be sexualised to make it? Is it all about confidence? And what is stopping more women joining the music industry, both on stage and behind the scenes?
