Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Thompson, Anglican Priest and Prison Chaplain:

My best friend Charlotte has a very special birthday today – 21 with experience…. We first met at school when we were both 11, and together we’ve weathered both the storms and the sunshine that life has brought our way. We’ve always joked with one another that we have to stay friends now - we both know so much about one another, warts’n’all, that we’d be dangerous enemies!

When I was in hospital many years ago, after a devastating event in my life, I found myself with not much family, no partner, and a pretty bleak view of the future. But when my childhood friend appeared at my bedside, I knew I’d been given something really valuable. A true friend doesn’t have to stay with you, they’re free to go at any time, walk away, no duty or legal obligation – but still my friend Charlotte chose to stay.

The Christian theologian Henri Nouwen wrote “The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.â€

This month our attention tends to be on a different sort of relationship – the romantic type, with Valentine’s Day on the way – and a lot of music and TV or films is focussed on ‘lurve’. But as much as I’m a sucker for hearts and flowers, I want to fly the flag for good old fashioned friendship as one of the most important elements in our lives.

In a week when we’re mourning the loss of Terry Wogan, I’ve seen at first hand the lasting impact a good friend can have on the lives of others. It’s made me reflect on how I can be a better friend to those I know – and it’s made me grateful indeed for the life, love and laughs I’ve shared with my own best mate.
