  During the making of A Very British Romance, I ran away to Gretna Green, visited the homes of writers from Jane Austen to Barbara Cartland, held a Victorian séance, and visited Quaglino’s in London for the ultimate 1930s dinner date.

  This series is all about books, and it’s hard to bring books to life for television. 

  So, to help viewers to visualise the plots we’re talking about, we had the help of some fine actors, from the three suitors in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility to the two lovers in E.M. Forster’s ²Ñ²¹³Ü°ù¾±³¦±ð.Ìý

  But perhaps the bit I most enjoyed was when I ‘became’ some of the characters myself, from the Georgian Mary Delaney, forced to marry an older man against her wishes, to the obstinate governess Jane Eyre in the world’s least flattering wig.
