It's the start of a new academic year and for thousands of students it's likely to be their first taste of living away from home, and cooking for themselves.听 So how will they manage?听 Students at the University of Warwick will have no excuse for not eating well.听 Every fresher has been given a copy of a specially-produced cookbook, called Simple Scoff.听 It's an entirely new edition of one first published in 1972, and comparing the two tells us a lot about how much food culture in Britain has changed in the past 43 years.

The European Court of Justice will make a preliminary ruling today on whether or not Britain's 'right to reside' test, which EU migrants must pass before they can claim some benefits, is legal. The European Commission says the test is discriminatory because UK citizens have to pass no such test in order to claim the same benefits. Winning the right to discriminate between British and EU citizens for in-work benefits is a major plank of Britain鈥檚 reform agenda, and so the ruling will be 鈥渁bsolutely central鈥� to the fate of the renegotiation, experts have said.

The small village of Great Heck near Goole in East Yorkshire is plagued by bad smells coming from a huge pile of rubbish left behind by Wagstaff Total Waste Management Limited; a waste management company that went into liquidation. Fed up with a lack of response, residents organised a protest over the weekend and asked the local MP Nigel Adams to take up the issue with the government. They say that the bill to clean up the site is 拢1 million and without the government help, it could take months.

The UK ranks first out of 80 countries in the 2015 Quality of Death Index, a measure of the quality of palliative care in dozens of countries around the world. It鈥檚 been researched by the Economist Intelligence Unit and the ranking is based on things like affordability, quality of care and community engagement.

The police officer killed by a stolen car yesterday didn't stand a chance, according to the chief constable of Merseyside Police. PC David Phillips, 34, was hit by a pick-up vehicle that mounted a central reservation in Wallasey, Merseyside. The married father-of-two had been trying to stop the vehicle, which was taken from an estate agents in Birkenhead.

Christine Foulton founded the charity Care of Police Survivors after her husband was murdered while on duty in 1994.

David Cameron called the election result in May 'the sweetest victory of all' - his parliamentary majority allowing him to deliver the Conservative manifesto in full; but the clock is ticking.
