An excavation will begin today to dig up a Spitfire from the field where it has lain for 75 years since it crashed during the Second World War. Archaeologists hope to recover surviving parts of the plane from the Cambridgeshire peat before the agricultural landscape is restored to wetlands as part of a major conservation project.

Large shops in England will start charge 5p for each plastic bag as of today. The rest of the UK has already introduced charges to discourage shoppers using plastic bags. Smaller retailers that have under 250 employers are exempt from the English rules and retail trade representatives worry that consumers will be confused. Ìý

A recently discovered fossil of a previously unknown species of mammal could give us some clues. David Cameron told the Andrew Marr show yesterday that the government would be publishing a new GP contract "focussing on making sure people can get access to a GP on a 7 day basis: 8am and 8pm".
