Chris' Pause For Thought: Julia Neuberger
From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:
Tonight, Yom Kippur begins, the holiest day of the Jewish year. Thereβs a 25 hour fast, we stay in synagogue all day tomorrow, and we pray, think, pray again, repent, and confess our sins.
This year, the refugees crowding into Europe, and the many Syrians in makeshift camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan will be at the forefront of our minds. All Jews are descended from migrants or refugees, unless we converted to Judaism. There is a folk memory here, so the congregation will think what more we can do to help, especially now the wave of anger and guilt has dissipated after Aylan Kurdiβs little body was washed up on a Turkish beach.
We already run a monthly drop in for asylum seekers at my synagogue. Maybe we should run it more often, help them with their English and perhaps teach the children to play again.
We all know the situation is desperate, yet how to respond is less clear. Should voluntary and religious organisations volunteer to take some of the burden? Tomorrow morning, weβll be reading the Hebrew prophet Isaiahβs stirring words: βIs this the fast I have chosen?β, as he berates the people for just observing the form of the ritual, rather than its meaning. Isaiah was probably a court prophet, and he saw how the rich and well connected behaved- and was appalled. These words tell them how to make sense of the holiest day of the year:
Β Is not this the fast the fast that I have chosen?
To loosen the fetters of evil,
To untie the straps of the yoke,
To let the oppressed go free, and whatever the yoke to break it?
Is it not sharing your food with the hungry?
And bringing the homeless into your homeβ¦β¦
We can clearly take this as a reference to asylum seekers and refugees. And so, this Yom Kippur, my congregation will pledge to take more action on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers. We canβt do much, but whoever saves a single life, it is as if he saved a whole world.
