Pause for Thought
From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Thompson, Anglican Priest and Prison Chaplain:
Μύ
Μύ
The last few weeks have been incredibly happy for me, and Iβve still got confetti, cards and cake brightening up my house. The wedding day was all I could have hoped it to be and I feel very blessed indeed.
Μύ
But thereβs been sadness too, because 2 days before the wedding my much-loved and very elderly dog Ralphi passed away. He and I had been to all kinds of places together β a year ago weβd even climbed Ben Nevis, and as he was a little Yorkshire terrier that was quite an achievement! Needless to say, after all those years of friendship, I was heartbroken.
Μύ
I had to make a conscious effort not to let Ralphiβs passing overshadow the joy I felt in getting ready for the wedding. Some grief counsellors say that losing a beloved pet can be as painful as losing a member of our human family, because we can have such a bond with animals.
Μύ
Joy and sorrow are the opposite sides of love, and both are proof of how deep a relationship can go. I had the extremes within a couple of days, and of course there canβt be many people who havenβt scaled the heights and plumbed the depths at some point. You only have to listen to the words of most of the songs played on this show to notice how many are about either the wonders of loving or the agony of loss.
Μύ
During the course of my ministry though, Iβve met lots of people whoβve been so overwhelmed with the down side of life theyβve decided to close off their hearts, so they donβt feel sadness anymore. The Christian writer CS Lewis put it very well β βthere is no safe investment. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal.β His point was that you can no more have one side of love than you can one side of a coin β we might avoid getting hurt, but weβll be locking ourselves away from all that life can bring, heaven included.
Μύ
So while Iβm still in champagne-and-celebration-mode, Iβll also raise a glass to my little canine friend Ralphi, and remember our time with a tear and a smile. Cheers.Μύ
