Pause for Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ

Μύ

Who’d ever have thought it – a full length feature film called β€œI am Big Bird”? It’s only showing in America just now but I’ll be at the head of the queue when it gets here. While kids over here were watching Bill and Ben and Trumpton, my kids were growing up across the Atlantic and exposed to American TV. So we all lived on Sesame Street and I fell in love with the 8ft high, bright yellow, adorable Big Bird with his immense capacity to engender love and to make people feel good. All this came flooding back when I heard Caroll Spinney, the man inside that muppet outfit, being interviewed the other day. He’s been doing this job since the character was invented in 1969. He’s 81 years young and the proverbial sandboy’s got nothing on him when it comes to happiness.

Μύ

Even more astonishing, it’s the very same Caroll Spinney who plays Oscar the Grouch, the slimey green character who sits in his dustbin hollering out his favourite song β€œI love trash,” the character who deliberately misunderstands, loves being awkward, hates having people around him.

Μύ

It’s mystifyingΜύ how one person can play two such opposite characters at the same time. Yet it may not be that difficult when we think about it. We’re all made up of good and bad; sometimes we see something that’s good but manage not to do it; even worse, we do bad things that we hate ourselves for. It’s as if there’s a struggle between good and bad deep down inside us. As if both Big Bird with his capacity to bring a little love into the world and also Oscar the Grouch with his misery and pessimism are two sides of our inner selves.

Μύ

Hate what is evil, cling to what is good, says Saint Paul in the hope that the Big Bird side of us may gain the upper hand.Μύ
