Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy a Catholic Passionist priest:

Accept the present moment as if you had chosen it for yourself.

There is no better description of a helpful way of life presently sweeping the world called Mindfulness. And that is exactly what we do on Pause for Thought every morning. It’s an opportunity to step out of the rat race and savour the present moment. It’s what major religions have always done, β€œBe still and know that I am God,” – the Psalm.

Mindfulness is a new way of describing an old practice, namely to be really conscious of life as it happens. β€œBe content with what you have” is a constant theme in the Bible. Living in the present, helps me to de-clutter my life, show down and be more contented.

It enables me to slow down the world a little; it de-clutters my life and helps me to be more contented and happy.

Through focussing on what I’m doing I learn that multi-tasking isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Now when I eat I enjoy the food and when I’m at the computer I ignore the phone and the telly.

I love constantly reviewing my life-style, I don’tΒ  take on as much as I used to; which helps me to concentrate totally on what I’m doing now without feeling guilty about other things I could be doing. I do less but do it better.Β  I leave blank spaces in my diary to fit in a few minutes to do nothing, other than admire the wonders around me.

When I live for now I fret less about the future. And my journey is easier when I don’t carry the past.

I appreciate the value of this moment before it becomes a mere memory.

Most of this is just common sense. I shouldn’t have to be told to slow down; to be aware of my thoughts; to listen to the birds, the wind in the trees and to let the silence guide my mind where it will. But mindfulness helps me to cherish the moment. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the best of moments or the worst of moments - it’s the only moment I’ve got.
