Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & Writer Paul Kerensa:

800 years ago to this very day, English barons gave an ultimatum to King John, which led to the Magna Carta. This ‘Magna Carta’, which I think is Latin for ‘big bit of paper’, means that today we are all subject to the law, from pauper to prince, with a right to justice and a fair trial. And it led in some way towards parliamentary democracy.

I’ve been elected, once in my life – as President.  President of Rutland Hall at Nottingham University, standing on a platform of getting games machines into the bar. In my tenure we delivered on that promise, and more – I also booked Lightning Seeds to play the Spring Party.

Some may have grumbled at my actions. For a few, perhaps there was a tedious wait for my term to be served, for those who preferred Space Invaders to my chosen quiz machine, and who wished we’d booked Dario G or Chumbawumba instead. But that ‘big bit of paper’ from 800 years ago helped ensure I was held accountable. Indeed, one committee member took actions into her own hands: she heard a dance cover version by Judge Jules on the radio, and booked him for the Summer Ball. Good on her. I'd never book a Judge by his cover.

For those who didn’t vote for me, there was a wait. But waiting doesn’t mean stopping. The Hebrew words for ‘waiting’ in the Old Testament, are all active – there’s a sense of getting on with things and shaping the future you want through your own actions. The exiled Israelites trusted in God’s plan, but as they waited, they lived out the future they wanted, there and then.

Regardless of how we voted last week, as we all wait to see what the future holds, perhaps in the mean time we can wait actively, getting our hands dirty with community, making a difference. I know a couple of folks who, over the weekend, have volunteered for food banks, or joined local causes at the ground level.

So while we’re waiting, maybe we can get stuck in ourselves. Because after all, the best things come to those who...
