Children’s Accidental Injuries and Identifying Abuse

It is clear from online networks such as Mumsnet and Netmums that some parents fear taking their child to the doctor with an accidental bruise or bump in case they are falsely accused of abusing their child and social services are alerted. Parents with a history of mental illness are particularly frightened that they could be perceived as bad parents if their child sustains any accidental injury. Geoff Debelle, Consultant Paediatrician at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and child protection lead for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, joins Jane to discuss how doctors identify accidental and non-accidental bruises, the training and guidance they follow, and how rare it is for mistakes to happen. And parent Sally Sutherland also joins Jane to reveal why she is scared to take her children to hospital after her son accidentally hurt his arm and she was warned she may not be able to take him home.

Wedding Dress Criticism

Wedding Dress Criticism
Whether it’s worst wedding dress lists or articles warning brides to beware the ugly dresses worn by celebrities, it seem that criticising nuptial attire is becoming an international sport- with the latest target being Kim Sears, who recently married Andy Murray. So why are wedding dresses such a contested minefield? Author and Editor-in-chief Of Harper's BAZAAR Justine Picardie and Acting Content Director of ELLE Kenya Hunt discuss if it’s ever ok to pass judgement on brides.

History Of A Suicide

Jill Bialosky’s sister Kim took her own life when she was 21 years old. Jill had been aware that Kim had been depressed and struggling with aspects of her life, but put it down to being young and being in love with the wrong man. Jill joins Jane to talk about her book History Of A Suicide, in which she looks back at her sister’s life and looks for clues as to why Kim chose to end it.

History Of A Suicide: My Sister’s Unfinished Life by Jill Bialosky is published by Granta

Personal Identity After 50

Personal Identity After 50

At the age of 50, you may or may not have had children. You may have fulfilled all your career, financial, and relationship goals, or you may not. So how do you feel at this stage in your life? What do you aim for next? Is it a time to move away from everything familiar and do something completely different? Does a 50 year old today feel the same as a 50 year old did 30 years ago? Does a woman’s sense of identity shift at this age, and if so, how? Jane is joined by Juliet Rix, columnist at The Guardian, by the actor Claire Dyson, and by university course director Susan Rowland.
