Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

Today I entered Radio 2 wearing dark glasses. Not because I鈥檓 one of the many rock gods who pass through... Less glamorously, I had laser eye surgery on the weekend. I refrained from quoting Goldfinger, as I reclined in the chair and they readied the laser: 鈥淵ou expect me to talk?鈥 鈥淣o, Mr Kerensa, we expect you to see!鈥

This follows a blurry eye condition I鈥檝e had for decades 鈥 鈥榢eratoconus鈥 鈥 meaning last year I had a corneal transplant. My cornea went, someone else鈥檚 was incredibly grafted on. And it has been noted that as a comedian, the last thing I should be getting, is cornea. (I am so sorry.)

I still gawp at my donor鈥檚 gift. All I know is she was female, in her 60s. I don鈥檛 know her family, but if they think of her as in some way still with us, I hope they realise she is, and she鈥檚 helping out, thanks to her generosity. Corneas are relatively in abundance 鈥 most people have two, and generally pass on with them intact. Meanwhile my cousin is recuperating right now from a pancreas and kidney transplant 鈥 good wishes to him, indeed to anyone recovering post-transplant.

I think it鈥檚 a forgotten act of giving. Maybe in some churches, organ donation is what happened when the pipe organ went, in favour of a snazzy keyboard. But for any of the faithful with doubts about organ donation, two quotes from Saint Paul鈥檚 letters: 鈥淣either death nor life, not anything else in creation, can separate us from the love of God.鈥 And: 鈥淣ot reluctantly or under compulsion... God loves a cheerful giver.鈥

We can give, or at least make plans to when we don鈥檛 need these mortal bits and pieces. And when lucky recipients like me gain a cornea, a pancreas, a kidney... I think we receive something else too 鈥 a spirit of generosity. Receiving my cornea made me sign up, so that when I pass on, I鈥檒l pass things on too. And that thought is what I鈥檓 passing on, to you.聽
