Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:

Thousands of people in Leicester today are expected to file past the last remains of King Richard III. This is such a weird and yet wonderful episode in our quirky British history. I was glued to the screen on Sunday as the last of the Plantagenets was ferried through the streets of the most cosmopolitan British city outside London. I saw Moslems, Sikhs and Hindus being interviewed – all paying their respects to a long-dead British king. It was oddly touching, touchingly odd. The funeral will take place on Thursday and that should be that for another five hundred years.

It was strange to hear prayers being offered for the repose of King Richard’s eternal soul. It was as if he’d died a few days ago. Yet this was only a skeleton. The man had had a Christian burial in 1485. So what on earth did we think we were doing with this box of bones? But my scepticism didn’t last long. How could it? Just a year ago, I’d had a similar experience.

We were digging down into the garden at the back of our church when we too found bones. We had to set them aside until the work was completed and then find another part of our site to re-bury them. They had been slum dwellers, some of whom had died of what would now be avoidable illnesses. I can’t tell you how I felt as I said prayers for these unidentifiable people. They’d lived lives, had families, worried about their kids, died young. To God there’s not an iota of difference between a king and the urban poor – we’re all precious in the eyes of our Maker. So my prayer was exactly the same as the one offered for the King, that the owners of these bones might rest in peace and rise in glory.
