About Hearing Link
Most people take listening, hearing and understanding for
granted and do it without much thought or effort.Μύ For people who develop hearing loss,
day-to-day communication can be far less easy.
Hearing Link is a UK charity for people with any level of
hearing loss and their family and friends.Μύ
We understand what it means to have hearing loss, and understand the
practical, emotional and social challenges it can bring.
Hearing Link offers a helpdesk, useful website and magazine,
group rehabilitation programmes, one-to-one support and more.

Case study: Wynne
Wynne is quietly successful, hard-working, proud of his
family and active in the community. But one day his life was turned completely
upside down.
He lost his hearing very suddenly. It came as a terrible
shock and affected his work, his family and his social life.
Daily activities became complex chores such as answering the
telephone or joining in with family conversations.
Then he received a leaflet about Hearing Link. Initially
sceptical, as well as extremely nervous, Wynne and his wife signed up for a
βSelf-Management Programmeβ, a highly personalised course offering one-to-one
support, run by trained volunteers who are themselves living with hearing loss.
Our programme has helped Wynneβs life enormously and to get
him back on track.
Wynne says, βHearing Link gave me back my meβ.
Case study: David
David Waltersβ hearing began to deteriorate after a firearms
incident at work triggered tinnitus in his left ear. Over eight years, his
hearing worsened and resulted in him being medically discharged from his job in
the Police.
However, the major turning point came in 2008 when without
warning he lost all hearing in his left ear and six weeks later lost all the
hearing in his right ear leaving him completely deaf.
This has had a devastating impact on his life.Μύ But since signing up to a Hearing Link programme, Dave says he has his life back.ΜύΜύ
βHearing Link proved to be my lifelineβ.
Case study: Shona
On the face of it Shona Hudson has lived a full life. She
attended mainstream school, got married and attended university, and now works
as a manager for a water utility company.
However, since birth, Shona has struggled with hearing loss.
Realising that her deteriorating hearing was affecting her work Shona sought
help and advice through Hearing Link.
She contacted our helpdesk team, which is run by volunteers
who have experience of hearing loss themselves, and suggested that Shona would
benefit from attending our highly regarded Self-Management Programme.
Since then Shona has regained her confidence at work. She
says βI see a world of opportunity to work with my hearing loss rather than
denying it.β
