Episode 12
Famous faces recreate their childhood holidays. Len Goodman takes Gloria Hunniford back to Newcastle in Northern Ireland to reminisce about her seaside holiday from 1948.
In today's journey through time Len Goodman takes presenter and journalist Gloria Hunniford back to the town of Newcastle in Northern Ireland to reminisce about her seaside holiday from 1948.
Len surprises Gloria by picking her up aboard a restored steam train in Portadown similar to the one she travelled in back in '48 - this train has been restored by volunteers from the Downpatrick and County Down Railway, but sadly the track doesn't stretch all the way to Newcastle.
On this particular holiday Gloria and her family stayed in a hotel (usually they stayed in a caravan) so Len takes her back to the exact rooms she stayed in. They talk about Gloria's time at the hotel and what it meant to spend time with her family - they also waste no time in singing a song, as singing was the start of Gloria's career in entertainment. She even had an Irish top 10 hit before she started her time presenting on television and the radio.
They also take a walk amongst the Mountains of Mourne, which again inspire a singsong. This is a stunning part of the world, with the mountains that drop dramatically to the coast. Len and Gloria talk about how this area is so special and somewhere she brought her own children including her late daughter, Caron Keating, who went on to present Blue Peter.
In a day packed with memories they also tuck into the calorific Ulster fry-up, have high tea at a posh hotel and play a game of rounders on the beach. Along with the layers of nostalgia, we also get some real insights into Gloria's career as a singer, radio presenter and now consumer journalist, and we have some fun along the way.
