Vernon Watkins

Episode 1 of 3

A portrait of Vernon Watkins, Welsh poet and close friend of Dylan Thomas. Featuring archive of Watkins that has remained unseen for over 40 years.

Described by his close friend Dylan Thomas as "the most profound and greatly accomplished Welshman writing poems in English", Vernon Watkins dedicated thirty years of his life to working on and promoting the poetry of Thomas and, in the process, his own body of work has been largely overlooked.

This programme tells the story of Swansea's other poet and his unique relationship with Dylan Thomas. It includes archive footage of Watkins that hasn't been seen in over 40 years and features contributions from his widow Gwen Watkins, biographer Richard Ramsbotham, Professor M Wynn Thomas of Swansea University and chairman of the Dylan Thomas Society, Jeff Towns.
