Action Against Hunger
Action Against Hunger is an international humanitarian organisation committed
to ending child malnutrition. The fight against this condition is one that we
can win: malnutrition is both treatable and preventable and efforts are underway, on an international
level, to end child hunger in our generation.
With 30 years of
expertise in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster and chronic
food insecurity, Action Against Hunger runs life-saving programmes in more than
45 countries, including Syria, South Sudan, Iraq and the Central African
Republic. Last year alone, we supported more than nine million
people.Β

Supporting the conflict-affected
Many people fleeing conflict walk for days seeking safety,
without access to food or clean water. Often, they arrive at camps severely
malnourished. Since conflict erupted in South Sudan in December 2013, more than
1.4 million people have been displaced and more than 400,000, many of them
women and children, have fled to neighbouring countries, such as Ethiopia, in
search of safety. In these emergency situations, our teams provide life-saving
therapeutic treatment, as well as psychological support, and food, water,
sanitation and hygiene assistance, in a bid to reduce suffering and save lives.

Providing life-saving support
In the Sahel, widespread poverty, food insecurity and
conflict has led to alarming childhood malnutrition rates in some areas. Bintu
Niare, 2, from Balako, Mali, weighed just five kilos when her mother brought
her to an Action Against Hunger-supported health centre. We administered
life-saving treatment and gave Bintu’s mum vital nutritional advice to help
ensure her children grow up healthy. Meanwhile, our food security, water and
sanitation programmes, along with ongoing support to public health systems, attempt
to address some of the root causes of this hunger.

Empowering communities
When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines almost a year ago,
19-year-old Roselyn Omeres (pictured,
centre), her 11 siblings, and ill mother, survived, but their home, land and
livelihood means were destroyed. With their home now rebuilt, Roselyn is using an
Action Against Hunger monthly cash grant to fulfil her dream of opening a small
shop. Such cash-based interventions form part of our long-term strategy to help
disaster-affected communities become self-sufficient again.
