Made in Dagenham
It was on the 7th June 1968 when the women sewing machinists at Ford’s Dagenham plant in London walked out in protest to their jobs being deemed unskilled, and therefore paid less. The strike eventually led to the Equal Pay Act of 1970. Now the story, Made in Dagenham, has been developed into a West End musical starring Gemma Arterton. Jenni and Gemma are joined in the studio by Gwen Davis and Eileen Pullen, two of the original women involved in that significant demand for equal pay.
Are Murder Laws Sexist?
Should courts be more lenient on a man who kills his partner when she has cheated on him? A murder conviction can no longer be reduced to manslaughter purely because of the victim’s sexual infidelity, after a 2009 change in the law. But new research suggests judges may be getting round the new law by continuing to hand out shorter sentences in such cases. Professor Jeremy Horder joins Jenni to discuss how his research shows our murder laws may still be sexist.
Arianna Franklyn’s un-finished work
When Diana Norman, better known to many as the historical novelist Arianna Franklyn, died three years ago, she left her latest work half finished. It was suggested that her husband, the film critic Barry Norman, complete it, but that task eventually fell to her daughter Sam. The book, Winter Siege, is a stand-alone historical novel that’s been a labour of love for her daughter. It's helped her to find her own voice as a writer and keep her mother’s memory alive.
Nina Simone
To mark Black History Month, we're re-broadcasting part of an archive interview from 1988 with Nina Simone, dubbed The High Priestess of Soul. The singer was active in the Civil Rights protests in America in the 1960’s and tirelessly championed African power and culture on the international stage. Famous for her turbulent life, just what does the singer stand for today? American-British playwright, Bonnie Greer joins the programme to discuss the singer’s impact and legacy.
How To: Public Speaking
Speaking in public is an essential life skill. Whether you're planning a presentation, steeling yourself to address a conference or speaking at a family occasion the challenges are the same. But it’s an art that few master. Women can find it even harder to get their voice heard and fear having to address a room full of people more than men. So how do you learn to be a confident and eloquent speaker? Nadine Dereza trains people in public speaking, and Laura Tension is the Founder and Managing Director of JoJo Maman Bébé. They join Jenni to reveal the secrets of their success in winning over an audience.
