Princely Creatures
North East Wales is home to some characterful, if elusive, reptiles and amphibians. In Science Cafe this week, Adam does a little hunting in the windswept sand dunes at Gronant, near Prestatyn. Conservationists have succeeded in reviving the Natterjack Toad in this area, and they're now hoping to grow the tiny population of Sand Lizards in the same spot. He talks to Mandy Cartwright, a dedicated amphibian and reptile warden for the area, and to Kim Norman, who manages this Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI).
And they're not the only two devoted to scaly-skin creatures. We hear from pupils at Ysgol San Sior, in Llandudno, who care for a veritable menagerie of Geckos, Chameleons, Skunk Lizards and Moroccan Dabtails. Headteacher Ian Jones says the cold-blooded creatures are both educational and inspiring.
They certainly inspired Adam, who snapped the tiny, Natterjack toadlet pictured above. Â
