As people in Scotland try to decide which way to vote in September 18th’s referendum, Roy Jenkins considers how far religious faith can and should inform the decision whether or not to vote for independence – and what are the implications for people of faith, whatever the outcome of the vote?

Roy’s guests include writer and retired minister Ron Ferguson (who will be voting yes), Rev'd Dr Ian Bradley (who will be voting no), Dr Anthony Allison, a researcher into religious attitudes in Scotland (and who is currently undecided) and Tim Duffy of the Catholic organisation Justice and Peace Scotland (who is currently undeclared).

As the debate becomes ever more passionate, members of the Church of Scotland have service sheets printed already for services of reconciliation, should divisions become uncomfortably deep when the final result is revealed. Meanwhile, as the country becomes ever more secular, there are signs that the biggest division of all won’t be between members of Scotland’s church’s and faith groups, but between people of faith and people of none.
