Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Rabbi Pete Tobias of the Liberal Synagogue, Elstree:

Ìý

I often wonder how many people remember what they learned in their Sunday school. My Sunday mornings were spent learning Hebrew letters and biblical stories. ÌýBut one Sunday morning lesson that is particularly clearly etched on my mind happened not in the synagogue where those classes took place but on the journey home in my dad’s car.

Ìý

He was driving through a particularly narrow street in our North-West London suburb of Wealdstone when he stopped the car sharply, leapt out and ran back a few yards. Had he run over a cat? A child? My sister and I watched with fascination as he went up the pathway of one of the houses and knocked on the door. An inaudible conversation ensued and my father wrote something on a piece of paper which he then handed to the woman at the door.

Ìý

He didn’t say anything when he got back into the car and drove home, and neither my sister nor I was brave enough to ask what had happened. It turned out that he had scraped the side of a parked car and had immediately stopped to give his details to that car’s owner. I don’t even know if the owner ever got back to him, as the damage was so minor. But the point was that he had admitted to his error immediately – and that incident of more than half a century ago has always stuck in my mind. Indeed after I recently hit the bumper of a parked car in a supermarket car park, I left my details and an explanation in a note which I put under their windscreen wiper, even though I could see no damage.

Ìý

Not so the person drove into the side of my car a few days ago. Having done several hundred pounds worth of damage, the culprit simply drove away as though nothing had happened. I don’t know if my father was unusual, or if we simply live in a different age now. I think he would have passed the test set by Rabbi Hillel who said ‘In a place where no one behaves like a human being, strive to behave like a human being’. I hope I can also live up to that ideal.
