Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From writer Abdul-Rehman Malik:

Μύ

It took me a long time to come to terms with being a parent. It wasn’t that I didn’t like children. I saw what delight and affection they brought into our lives. As an uncle to many nieces and nephews, I loved being called upon to entertain and indulge. My friends noted that I had the brilliant knack of putting their crankiest offspring to sleep, a skill I put down to an exceptional talent for humming, swaying side to side and being soft in the middle.

Μύ

I reflected on the way in which my parents – despite the trouble we caused them – continued to love me and my siblings. It was precisely this kind of boundless and unconditional love that frightened me. I didn’t know if I could handle such love. I didn’t know if I could deal with all of its consequences.

Μύ

Life is fragile. It’s the truest of clichΓ©s. With the coming of joy, we also accept the pain of loss. I came to the conclusion that there was no greater loss than to lose a child. I had sat with parents who had lost children. The depth of their sadness mirrored the well of their love. ΜύΜύ

Μύ

9 years ago today, London was rocked by violence. The terrorist attacks of 7 July 2005 took the lives of 52 people. It is not easy to forget that day.ΜύΜύToday I will pray for all the mothers and fathers, sons and daughters who experienced loss that day, knowing that many of them have in the years that have followed the attacks become the most vocal advocates for peace and non-violence.

Μύ

I will remember those who sought to vanquish the hate of the bombers with thousands of acts of kindness, bombers whose actions made a mockery of their faith and violated the very foundation of their religion.Μύ

Μύ

"The best of people,” said the Prophet Muhammad, β€œare those that bring most benefit to humanity."Μύ

I have since become a father. I cannot imagine life without my son, but as much as I want to keep him from harm’s way, I know I can’t watch over him constantly. I’ll have to leave that to God.

Μύ

What I can do is teach him that the love he is shown is love he must give. May our children always know peace and safety, and may their lives be made truly righteous through service to others.
