Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought
Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:

Ìý

The World Cup kicks off tonight so over the coming weeks, whether you like it or not, it’s going to be wall to wall football. But before we plunge into the frenzy, let’s pause for a moment to look at what the beautiful game offers the world. As this year is also the centenary of the outbreak of World War I my mind turns to the Christmas Truce of 1914 when British and German soldiers came out of their trenches and had a kick about in no man’s land. It wasn’t even a proper game, but it did build bridges between enemies. There was something of this same spirit in the meeting last week between the Israeli and Palestinian Presidents hosted by Pope Francis in the Vatican. This was not a negotiation but a moment of prayer that bridged the gap between enemies, just as football had done in 1914.

Ìý

At the end of a football match, you’re left not only with the result but also with the way the game was played. Which is more important? I’d say the way the game was played because that’s what brings people together not the result. I was speaking to a primary school head teacher recently and she told me proudly that another head teacher had decided to send his son to her school. He was a ref in the local schools league and he chose the school because of the school’s football team. Not their record of wins, he said, but the way they played.

Ìý

I thank God for the way sport can be played to bring out the best in people, the best of physical skills and the best of the human spirit. During these days in Brazil, I pray that the beautiful game lives up to its name.
