Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Toze, Anglican Priest and Prison Chaplain:

Ìý

Along with Christian churches around the world, I celebrated Pentecost in my prison chapel this last Sunday. Both Rabbi Pete and Rabbi Julia have spoken about the original Jewish festival of Shavuot and the first Christian day of Pentecost came when disciples of Jesus, observant Jews, were praying in the temple in Jerusalem to celebrate that festival.

Ìý

Suddenly the Holy Spirit is said to have come upon them like a rushing wind, and like tongues of flame, and they were able to speak in many different languages. Mysterious goings on indeed, and bystanders reckoned they were either mad or drunk! But it was a moment of profound change. After this day the disciples began to travel, spreading their message and beginning a religious movement that would influence the world - which is why it’s become known as the ‘birthday’ of the church.

Ìý

Well, two thousand years have passed since then, which is a lot of birthdays. We’ve come to have, maybe rightly, quite a jaded view of religious institutions, especially the church. Some might feel that the ‘old lady’ has got a bit past it. You know, nice to hear the old stories, but completely out of touch with today.Ìý And I know there have been some terrible things done by people who represent religions and religious institutions.

Ìý

But understandable frustration with a flawed institution can mean we miss the radical humanity, as well as spirituality, at the heart of the teachings of Jesus. I think about all the amazing work that’s going on in the name of the church, and it makes me want to say ‘there’s life in the old girl yet.’ Food banks and schools, international aid agencies, children’s charities, rehabilitation of offenders, visiting the elderly - just a few examples of Christian people putting their beliefs into action.

Ìý

Well, we had our birthday celebration in the prison chapel, and whilst there was cake, there were no gales blowing or bursts of flame. But there was a strong sense that alongside millions the world over, our birthday gift is to do all we can to make the world a better place.
