Three times nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, Archbishop Elias Chacour is a Palestinian Arab Christian, and an Israeli citizen.ΜύΜύ He retired earlier this year after eight years as leader of the Melkite Catholics, the largest Christian community in Israel.

But it was as the parish priest of a Palestinian village in Galilee that he established an international reputation.ΜύΜύ He founded a cluster of pioneering schools open to children and young people regardless of religious affiliation; Μύand by living out the way of non-violence, he has built bridges between various faith communities.

The book Blood Brothers, his account of his own childhood, the destruction of his home by the Israeli authorities, and exile in his own land, has remained in print for thirty years and been translated into more than twenty languages.

Elias Chacour has been in Wales this week delivering a keynote address to a conference of the ecumenical body Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.
