The Secret of Success

On All Things Considered this week Mary Stallard and guests are looking for the secret of success.

Μύ

The Winter Olympics get underway in Sochi in the coming days and for many of those taking part the success or otherwise of their games will be measured by the records they break or the clutch and colour of the medals they gain.

Μύ

But it’s not just in the field of sport that we are conditioned to compete. At the moment celebrities from the world of music and entertainment are in the middle of their awards season. And for the rest of us,Μύ even in a time of relative austerity, the wages we earn, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive and the places where we holiday can be seen as indicators of how successful we are.

Μύ

So today we are talking about success – what is it? How do you get it? ΜύHow do you keep it? And how do you best use it when you’ve got it?

Μύ

Albert Einstein once said, β€œTry not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value.” But do we often compromise on our values as we strive to succeed or is it possible for people of faith to reconcile a desire to be successful with the desire to serve God?

Μύ

Joining Mary Stallard to discuss these issues are Ilora Finlay a world expert in palliative medicine and an honorary professor and former vice dean of Cardiff University’s School of Medicine.Μύ She’s a life peer and sits in the House of Lords as Baroness Finlay of Llandaff.

Lorraine Brown who’s a deacon in the Methodist Church and Director of the Amelia Trust Farm in the Vale of Glamorgan which amongst other things, works with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. Μύ

Rob Parsons, founder and chairman of the charity β€˜Care for the Family’ and bestselling author. Among his array of books is one entitled; β€˜The Heart of Success: Making it in Business without Losing in Life’.ΜύΜύ

And broadcaster Mal Pope, who presents his own show on a Saturday morning here on Radio Wales, and then reminds us all of the station’s highlights with β€˜The Best of Radio Wales’ on a Sunday afternoon. ΜύAs if that wasn’t enough, he’s also an accomplished singer / songwriter, who at the tender age of 13 signed a record deal with Elton John. Since then, he’s worked with Cliff Richard, The Hollies and Art Garfunkel to name but a few.
