Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Reverend Rob Gillion, Rector of Holy Trinity Church and St Saviours:

Ìý

Lets not give up when the going gets tough but like the wise men, persevere. Perhaps a good new years resolution. For today is the feast of Epiphany. The day the wise men brought their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Jesus. Why so late?

Ìý

Well, we read in the Bible that they lost their way because they ignored the sign God had given them, the star in the east. Instead of waiting patiently for clarity of direction they asked advice from the wrong person, King Herod who had his own agenda, fear of anyone who might challenge his power. It led to Jesus and his family becoming refugees in Egypt, until Herod died and they could return in safety.

Ìý

It is a contemporary story when so many families including children have had to flee from places like Syria and the Sudan as refugees and would no doubt love to return. But for now need our help.

Ìý

The gifts the wise men brought, raise significant questions for us about life.

Ìý

Gold, the gift of wealth -how do we share the world's resources with those in greatest need?

Ìý

Frankincense, represents the gift of prayer in seeking guidance - how should we do the right thing?

Ìý

Myrrh, a symbol of life and death - how do we relieve the suffering in this world?

Ìý

Jesus sought to answer these questions throughout his ministry.

Ìý

In 2014 perhaps this might be my resolution, to ask these questions of myself and offer my gifts once more? To persevere and not give up in a challenging world, and seek to make it a better place.

Ìý

My favourite carol on this last day of Christmas is 'In the Bleak Midwinter' which in its last verse sums up for me the reason for gift giving at Christmas.

Ìý

What can I give him poor as I am

If I were a shepherd I would give a lamb

If I were a wise man I would do my part

But what I have I give him give my heart.

Ìý

For I believe that every day is a gift from God, how we live it is our gift to him.
