The Girl Guides

Today Gemma Hunt finds out about the creation of the Girl Guides and hears how the early Guides had to struggle to enjoy equality with the Scouts.

Today Gemma Hunt finds out about the creation of the Girl Guides over 100 years ago and visits some present-day Brownies and Guides to discover how things have changed. In the story we hear how the Guides were formed after a group of girls, who wanted to be Scouts like their brothers, heckled Robert Baden-Powell at a rally in 1909 and he persuaded his sister, Agnes, to be president of a new Girl Guide organisation.
