Kevin Le Gendre presents British reeds player Tom Challenger and his Brass Mask octet performing music from their new album. With a line-up of 3 woodwind, 4 brass and percussion, they're tailor-made for the bluesy New Orleans street-band sound that filters through the music. But the avant-garde ensemble writing of Henry Threadgill is also an acknowledged influence on the group, reflected in the pinpoint ensemble writing, some abstracted grooves and plenty of surprising harmonic twists and turns.
