‘I didn’t know my place.  I’ve never known my place.’  The words sound like the protest of a complete rebel.   In fact, they come from one of the most distinguished figures in the religious life of Britain - a member of the House of Lords, author, social reformer and media commentator.

On All Things Considered this week, Roy Jenkins’ guest  is Baroness Julia Neuberger, only the second female rabbi in Britain, and the first in the world to have her own congregation.

She has filled literally scores of public offices - run the influential health think tank The Kings Fund, chaired the Patients’ Association and a health trust, judged the Booker prize, and worked with organisations as diverse as the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and the Imperial War Museum.
