Paul Gambaccini blends this week's US hits from the digital songs, albums, country, R&B and rock charts with LP and singles classics from the last six decades.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
In the feature 'Headline News [Number one albums on noteworthy days]' we hear 'Stardust' by Nat 'King' Cole from his album 'Love Is The Thing'. It was number one on 15th June 1957, the day on which the last production of 'Ziegfeld Follies' closed at the Winter Garden, New York City. We also hear 'Hung Up' from Madonna's album 'Confessions On A Dance Floor'. It was number one on 3rd December 2005 when the wedding of Marilyn Manson and burlesque dancer Dita von Teese took place. In the regular feature 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', tracks are played from albums by America and Carrie Underwood.
In 'A Matter Of Life And Death' Paul celebrates the birthday of Kim Carnes by playing her hit 'More Love'. As a tribute to the drummer of Devo, Alan Myers, who has recently died, we hear 'Whip It' by the group. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'You' by George Harrison and a different song with the same title by Rita Coolidge. In the feature called 'Both Sides Now', Paul plays a single by an American artist that was a hit in the UK but not in the US and an American hit by a British artist that was not a hit in the UK.
Our R&B Number Ones are from 1999 and this week by Destiny's Child and Alicia Keys with Maxwell. We hear Country number ones from 1966 and now by Buck Owens & The Buckaroos and Florida Georgia Line. This week's featured past and present Rock number ones are by Of Monsters And Men and Imagine Dragons. 'Blurred Lines' by Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell Williams is the best-selling song of the week.
