RETRAK

Retrak believe in a world where no child is forced to live on the streets. We reach out to vulnerable street children suffering hunger, poverty, abuse and violence to ensure that they have an alternative to life on the streets. We provide a safe place to stay along with food, medicine, clothing, and an education which they desperately need. We understand the importance for children of a stable and loving home, and so we go to great lengths to reunite families, or, where this is not possible, find and train caring foster families.

Retrak tackles the reasons why children end up on the streets. We work with families to heal rifts, support children’s education, to provide income generating activity and vocational training to provide children and parents with a fulfilling and sustainable income for the future.

Retrak has over 15 years experience of working with street children, their families and communities. We work in Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. Our long term approach helps to make sure that children never have to go back to living on the street, and it works.

Retrak reunites families which have been separated from their young children due to poverty, conflict, HIV/AIDS, sometimes travelling for days to find the children’s homes. This picture shows three excited boys on their way home with us in Ethiopia.

Retrak helps street girls like Florence find safety and comfort from abuse, violence and trafficking on the streets. 25% of street children are girls, and currently only a third of these girls are receiving the help they need. We are working to ensure street girls have access to their rights through counselling, shelter and education.

Many children who come to Retrak have suffered terrible injuries whilst living on the street. Retrak provides medical care in our drop in centre clinics and without the help of our medical team, some may not have survived.
