Are 'Friends' Electric?

Johnnie Walker spins 70s hits and rarities, catches up with Gary Numan and re-visits a classic album from the Average White Band.

Johnnie spins the hits and rarities from the decade of big hair, big flares and big riffs. This week, he catches up with the pioneer of electronic music, Gary Numan.

Numan rose to prominence in the 70s as the lead singer, writer and producer for Tubeway Army, who reached No. 1 on the UK Charts with Are 'Friends' Electric? in May 1979. By September of the same year, Numan went solo and scored another chart topper with Cars.

Not part of the punk or new romantic movements, Numan ploughed his own furrow throughout the 70s and a dedicated fanbase of "Numanoids" grew around him. Together with Johnnie Walker, he will get into the decade that started it all for him, and how he set about creating electronic music that went on to influence countless artists across the globe.

Also on the show, Johnnie spins tracks from the Average White Band's seminal sophomore release AWB from 1974. The record was the Scottish funk group's breakout release, selling over a million copies and knocking Linda Ronstadt off the top of the US Billboard Chart.
