Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
In the feature Baby What A Big Surprise [they really were Number One albums] we hear Whipped Cream by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass from the 1965 LP Whipped Cream & Other Delights. The only other artists to have number one albums in 1965 were Elvis, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones ...plus those on soundtrack albums.
We also hear Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple from the 1997 soundtrack album Private Parts. In the regular feature The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face songs are featured from LPs by Tom Jones and Elton John. It's Not The Same Old Song highlights Patches by Dickey Lee and a different song with the same title by Clarence Carter.
In A Matter Of Life And Death, Paul celebrates the birth on this date in 1927 of Andy Williams. We also hear Now That We Found Love by Heavy D & The Boyz, as a tribute to the recently deceased artist and record company executive Dwight Myers. What The World Needs Now Is Love by Jackie DeShannon and What'd I Say (Part 1) by Ray Charles are this week's featured songs from the Grammy Hall Of Fame Singles list.
Our R&B Number Ones are from 1973 - If You're Ready (Come Go With Me) by the Staple Singers - and this week - Stay by Tyrese. We hear Country Number Ones from 1971 and now by Charley Pride and Toby Keith. This week's past and present Rock Number Ones are by the Lemonheads and Bush. This week's number one album is Take Care by Drake. On the singles side, We Found Love by Rihanna and Calvin Harris is still Number One.
