Mike Harding presents an hour of the best in folk, roots and acoustic music, including an interview with the great American singer and songwriter Loudon Wainwright III. As he prepares to embark on a UK tour and release a retrospective box set, Loudon talks about his colourful 40-year career.

The 64-year-old, originally from North Carolina, broke on to the music scene in the early 1970s and made a name for himself with witty, moving and often intensely personal songs. The relationships between Loudon, his late ex-wife the folk singer Kate McGarrigle, and talented children Martha and Rufus Wainwright, have provided the subject matter for a number of brutally revealing songs, including Hitting You and A Father and a Son.

He has turned his hand with great success to traditional songs; in 2009 he collected the Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy for High Wide and Handsome. As an actor he appeared in classic US comedy M*A*S*H and more recently in feature films including The Aviator, Big Fish and Judd Apatow's Knocked Up, for which he also co-wrote the original soundtrack.

On tonight's programme, Loudon Wainwright III talks to Mike Harding about where he's been, where he is now, and where he's going.
