Mark Lamarr plays a host of tunes that you rarely hear on the radio and is joined by this week's band, The Mouse Outfit. Hailing from Manchester, The Mouse Outfit are an eight-piece, live hip-hop band who perform a blend of hip-hop, jazz and funk breaks.
The featured artist this week is Shirley Ellis who despite only making three albums became famous for her wordplay lyrics with songs like 'Ka Ta Ga Boom Beat' and 'The Puzzle Song'.
Inspired by one of Shirley's songs the theme for the night is 'Nitty Gritty' with Mark playing different versions of the track by Primal Scream, Ricardo Ray, Gladys Knight and Pips, Chuck Berry and of course Shirley herself.
The album this week is 'Jamaica - Mento from 1951 - 1958', a collection of songs that represent the original popular music from Jamaica. Mark picks tracks by Lord Flea, Hubert Porter with the Tower Islanders, Hubert Porter and Count Lasher.
In the gospel slot, Mark chooses one of the biggest bands in this field, The Pilgrim Travellers and picks two great a capella songs 'I Want My Crown' and 'Standing On The Highway'. Elvis Costello's mellow vocals provide the aural massage and Count Basie will be taking us pre-war with his song 'Stop Beating Around The Mulberry Bush'.
